Unless you want to eat at home until your children are driving age, at some point you are going to have to bite the bullet and take them to restaurants with you. This does not have to be as painful for you and your neighboring diners as it seems it would be. In fact, taking children to restaurants more often is how you will get them comfortable in this very public environment. You can enjoy eating out at restaurants with your little ones. All it takes is for you to have a successful restaurant visit is a little preparedness and flexibility.

Bringing a bag of tricks with you is essential to keeping your kids busy and happy. The paper and crayons most restaurants provide usually only hold children\’s interest for a short while. Bring small toys that they can use at the table without being destructive and without having to get up. Small toy cars are an example of fun and portable toys. all around their place mat. Take favorite books and books they haven\’t read yet. Bring small arts and crafts like stamping kits, and hand held puzzles like the Rubik\’s Cube. Keep your bag of diversions strictly for use at a restaurant, and they will look forward to going out so they can play with those toys.

Sometimes the kids are simply too hungry to wait. Take with you snacks that won\’t fill them up, and let them eat a little while you wait for your order to arrive. Raisins, a few Cheerios and some cut up fruit will keep them occupied. Make sure that you only take the edge off of their hunger, and do not give them too much. You do want them to eat the meal when it finally arrives.

Finally, realize that admitting defeat and leaving the restaurant early when the kids have an off night is something we have all had to do. Everyone has experienced nights where the children would prefer to throw the toy cars instead of play with them, do not want to eat any of the food they are offered, and the entire time at the restaurant is spent chasing them back to their seats and begging them to lower their voices. Every once in a while kids just cannot fit themselves into adult plans. Take them home, and try again in a few days. As children visit restaurants more often, they will become more comfortable to the environment and understand what behavior you expect from them.
