Claims from British quake may run into “low tens of millions of pounds” – Insurance association reps

Representatives from the British insurance industry have said that the cost of the earthquake which hit Britain early yesterday could be over 10 million GBP. The Association of British Insurers has said in a statement that the cost for the earthquake is “likely to run into the low tens of millions of pounds.”

The Senior claims manager at the UK bank Norwich Union has described the damage by saying that at the moment most insurance claims regarding the earthquake describe “minor damage such as tiles off roofs, breakages inside the homes and brick walls collapsing.” It has also been reported that approximately 1,200 insurance claims were made in the first twelve hours after the earthquake hit Britain.

These reports come one day after the United Kingdom was hit by a 5.2 earthquake. Tremors were reported as widespread as Edinburgh, Manchester, Sheffield, Middlesbrough, Cambridge, London, Birmingham and Southampton .

Ten dead on Minnesota Indian reservation after school shooting

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

A 17-year-old Minnesota student is believed to have shot his grandfather and grandmother, drove his grandfather’s squad car to the high school, and shot a security guard, a teacher and five other classmates, later committing suicide. This happened at 3pm local time on Monday (2100 UTC), and as many as 14 others were injured before the rampage subsided.

One witness said of the gunman, he was “grinning and waving”.

“I looked him in the eye and ran in the room, and that’s when I hid,” Sondra Hegstrom told The Pioneer of Bemidji. “You could hear a girl saying, ‘No, Jeff, quit, quit. Leave me alone. What are you doing?”

Today’s incident marks the highest death toll yet in US school shootings since the Columbine High School massacre in April 1999. There were 15 people shot in Jefferson County, near Littleton, Colorado, in the Columbine shooting.

Police are still investigating any possible motive.

“It will probably take us throughout the night to really put the whole picture together,” said FBI spokesman Paul McCabe in a briefing to the press. “We do have evidence that we believe that the shooter is dead,” he continued, “we believe he was acting alone.”

Reporters were asked to leave the area, located on The Red Lake reservation, by tribal authorities.

“The events that took place today involving the shootings at the Red Lake High School make this one of the darkest and most painful occurrences in the history of our tribe,” said Floyd Jourdain Jr., Chairman of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. The Indian band is made up of about 5,100 people, living on 825,000 acres of land in the northern part of the state.

Minnesota’s last school shooting was in September 2003, when two students were fatally shot at Rocori High School. That incident had statewide implications, causing a hearing on expansion of tribal gaming in Minnesota to be canceled for the day.

“We ask Minnesotans to help comfort the families and friends of the victims who are suffering unimaginable pain by extending prayers and expressions of support,” said a statement from Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Suspected serial killer appears in British court

Friday, May 28, 2010

A man accused of being a serial killer has appeared in Bradford magistrates court in West Yorkshire today charged with three counts of murder. 40-year-old Stephen Griffiths is accused of killing Suzanne Blamires, 36, Susan Rushworth, 43, and Shelley Armitage, 31, all prostitutes.

Griffiths, a former van driver with a degree in psychology and studying for a PhD in criminology, gave his name as “Crossbow Cannibal” when asked. He has been in police custody since Monday when police were alerted to a CCTV recording that appeared to show a murder.

A caretaker had been reviewing footage from the flats where Griffiths lives when he saw footage of a woman and a man enter a flat early on Saturday morning. Two minutes later, she ran out and was followed by the man, who beat her to the ground and shot her in the head with a crossbow. Over the course of the weekend, the man was seen several times with bin bags and a rucksack.

On Tuesday, the day after the arrest of Griffiths, Blamires’ remains were found in the River Aire in nearby Shipley. She had been cut into several pieces and her head was located in a rucksack. Police continue to search for the other two alleged victims; Rushworth has been missing since June last year and Armitage vanished in April.

Police have searched much of Bradford’s red-light district, where Griffiths’ third-floor flat is located. Forensic investigations at the flat are expected to last around three weeks. There are plans to search landfill sites for bodies, and police may yet expand the inquiry to cover three more cold cases, although at present they have not been linked to the current inquiry.

Sniffer dogs have been used throughout the city, and police have been taking away plastic evidence bags. Some alleyways remain closed off. Police charged their suspect yesterday.

Griffiths was known as “the lizard man” in his block of flats owing to his habit of walking his two pet monitor lizards in the area. One neighbour is reported to have quoted him as saying he was studying for “a PhD in murder and Jack the Ripper,” and he has spent time in a high-security psychiatric hospital. During his five-minute court appearance he did not enter a plea, kept his head bowed and fidgeted with his cuffed hands. He said “Here, I guess,” when asked for his address.

As he stood in the glass-fronted dock, guarded by three security officers, he was watched by the families of Rushworth and Armitage, who were accompanied by police family liaison officers. Blamires’ family chose not to be present, but the victim’s mother Nicky Blamires, 54, has told the press that Suzanne was a “much-loved” family member even though she “went down the wrong path and did not have the life she was meant to have.” “Nobody deserves this,” she said. “All these girls were human beings and people’s daughters.”

Griffiths’ morning court appearance was followed by a second one this afternoon, at Bradford Crown Court. This time, he confirmed his name without incident. He was remanded into custody until next month, when he will appear in court again.

British media has been quick to compare the case to Peter Sutcliffe, dubbed the “Yorkshire Ripper”. Sutcliffe was a Bradford killer responsible for thirteen murders and seven attempted murders, including several prostitutes. Since his 1981 conviction he has spent most of the last three decades in Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital near London.

Pros And Cons Of Using Disposable Tableware

Pros and Cons of Using Disposable Tableware

by

Jamie Highland

When planning for a party there is always the question of what kind of tableware should be used. This is especially true when planning for a baby shower party where the opinion of the new mother-to-be is critical.

There are really some who will not object to using disposable forks and spoons for baby shower tableware and then there are those who are adamantly against it. Here are some pros and cons to using disposable tableware.

Pros

One It is really easy to clean up after a party or event if all the tableware is disposable. Once all the guests have left, the one left cleaning after the place has to gather all the evidence of the party and make everything tidy once more. If all the baby shower tableware is disposable a simple swipe of the hand directing all these into the waiting black bag cuts the cleanup time to less than half. Otherwise, a lot of time consuming dish washing could be involved.

Two If the party has a theme or even a color scheme, it is often possible to find tableware that matches this exact theme and thus enhances the decorations for the event. Sometimes even plain colored plates and napkins will match the decorations better than the plate you have in the cupboard. If having the perfect decorations is important, then disposable tableware might make sense.

Three They are really cheap and can be purchased online or at a local store.

Cons

One Some people don t like disposable tableware because they create more trash, which is bad for the environment. Even biodegradable and other earth friendly products will not be as environmentally friendly as using regular dishes and washing them.

Two Disposable tableware is not sized properly and some are either too small and others too large. It is also harder to eat with plastic utensils than regular forks and spoons. Plastic knives don t cut as well as metal knives either. Paper plates can be too thin for some types of greasy foods, which can result in a mess if they leak through.

Three The worst thing that can happen is that when eating with these disposables, they could break while still in the mouth. Some of the tines of the forks can even get lost in a cake and if one is not careful they could be eaten by a child or an adult.

But don t let the cons scare away the idea of using disposable tableware for a party. If one is really stressed out and cleanup is an issue, then go for it.

However, if there are kids around, then an adult should take charge of the little kids who don t know how to eat properly yet. Also, it is best for one or two adults to be vigilant over the kids come eating time. They have a tendency to run around with a fork in hand when they get too excited over something.

Don t let the issue of baby shower tableware dampen the fun of the party. Decide whichever is most convenient for everybody.

Wikinews interviews Anda Banikos, local council candidate in South Gippsland, Australia

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5-22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Anda Banikos, an independent candidate running in the Coastal-Promontory Ward. The Coastal-Promontory ward covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora, and elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.

Avoid Bad Cosmetic Surgery Don’t Get Scammed}

Avoid Bad Cosmetic Surgery – Don’t Get Scammed

by

Eddie LambThat cosmetic surgeon seems so nice. He seems so educated and he really wants to help you rid yourself of all those insecurities. He wants to help you to have a smaller nose. A smaller nose, he says, will set all of your other features off. It will put everything in balance. All you have to do is sign here and he can make all of your dreams come true.

After the surgery, you wake up to find yourself horribly scarred. The doctor tells you it’s normal, that it’s just swelling and it will go down and he sends you home. After a few days, you know something’s wrong. You go to the doctor to find his office is empty. You’ve been scarred forever because you just became the victim of bad cosmetic surgery.

Bad cosmetic surgery happens when doctors, with no certification, call themselves cosmetic surgeons and begin taking customers. These customers, who don’t know any better, go under the knife trusting this person. They trust this person because they sound so convincing. They look the part, they talk the part and, after all, they run a cosmetic surgery clinic. These people aren’t certified, however. They aren’t qualified to perform cosmetic surgery and they are out to scam good people out of their money while performing bad cosmetic surgery on people who trust them.

Is the bad cosmetic surgeon purposeful in his incompetence? Is it right that people end up with scarring or worse effects, as left over rewards of having bad cosmetic surgery? These crooks get away with a lot of money and the patient is left with a constant reminder of the time they were unwittingly duped. They were scammed and they have the literal scars to prove it.

Protect Yourself

Bad cosmetic surgery happens all the time. This isn’t to say that your local cosmetic surgeon is a crook. There are lots of cosmetic surgeons and many of them are, indeed, certified and qualified to operate on people for cosmetic reasons. Your job as the patient is to research the particular doctor that you plan to visit. Ask for testimonials and pictures of their previous surgeries. Only by taking as many precautions as possible can you go some way to protect yourself in your hope to avoid bad plastic surgery.

So, before you have that ‘life saving’ surgery performed, do your homework and don’t become a victim. Don’t become another botched job as a result of fraudsters who carry out bad cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can change your life but let it change your life for the better. Bad cosmetic surgery can only change it for the worse.

Eddie Lamb provides an abundance of vital information on a range of health topics. We believe a better understanding of your disorder can help reduce unnecessary anxiety. You’ll find a host of useful articles all about cosmetic surgery listed on our site map page at

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.
