Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

How To Be An Affiliate While Leaving Your Day Job!

By Mark Persaud

Learning how to be an affiliate is a very rewarding experience. Many of us dream of changing jobs. We get tired of doing the same work everyday. Some of us detest the poisonous atmosphere created by office politics. A lot of us would enjoy spending more time with our families and friends. Reading this article will give you some ideas about how you can leave all that behind and start building your own business from scratch.

LEARN HOW TO BE AN AFFILIATE FIRST – THEN QUIT YOUR DAY JOB

If you have a regular job, keep it for now. If you are desperate for money find an offline job, any job so you can pay the rent. Once you are working and you don’t need to worry about paying the bills you can learn how to be an affiliate marketer.

There is a very good reason for this. Contrary to what you may read on the internet this business can’t be built overnight. There is a learning curve involved. The work is relatively simple and the material easy to learn. However, each part of the process needs to be done well and there are many things that may go wrong. In addition, a fair amount of time is required for you to build a presence on the web. Even using automated methods will require a large investment of time before being able to quit your day job.

LEARNING HOW TO BE AN AFFILIATE IS A WORTHWHILE DREAM

Learning how to be an affiliate is a worthwhile dream. We live in an instant society where people want things immediately. Life doesn’t always work that way and this is one such instance. It will take a good 2 to 3 years for the average person to become exceptional selling commodities (quit day job). The average Joe/Jane will see results within 3 to 6 months assuming he/she stays focused. Compare this to returning to college or starting a business offline and you will realize it really doesn’t require as large an investment of time or money.

HOW TO BE AN AFFILIATE AND EXCEL AT YOUR JOB

Marketing on the internet is constantly changing. It is important that the marketer receive relevant and accurate information at all times concerning marketing techniques. For example, Google is constantly changing its algorithms and people need to be aware of such changes. Beginners will benefit from joining a reputable on-line training facility because it will provide all of the most up-to-date education, tools and support necessary for building the business.

Paying a monthly membership fee may seem expensive at first but compared to the time saved searching the web for information and the money saved by having all the tools in one place it really is a wise investment. You can also build relationships of trust with other members. There will always be a more successful member willing to help you reach the next level.

LEARNING HOW TO BE AN AFFILIATE MEANS DOING YOUR DUE DILIGENCE

There are several different training facilities available for new entrepreneurs. You need to do your due diligence which means researching the various facilities to find the one that is most suitable for your needs.

While researching keep in mind several factors:

1. Are the owners of the training facility successful at selling goods online? If yes, this means they will understand what you are going through and they will be willing to help you overcome difficulties. It should be posted on the site.

2. What are members saying about the training and community? Are they satisfied? Are the members helpful and positive? Read reviews or visit forums.

3. What kinds of tools are available? Everything from hosting to research tools should be available because you don’t want to be spending anymore money than necessary. It should be posted on the site.

4. How long has the company been in business? Is it well established? Will it be around in the next few years?

5. Is there some form of personal coaching available? This is a very underdeveloped area in the industry today. With my 15 years of ESL teaching experience I hope to contribute to the growth of this area in the years to come.

I hope this has been of some help to you.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Bush nominates Chertoff for new Secretary of Homeland Security

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

U.S. President George W. Bush nominated Federal Judge Michael Chertoff as the next Secretary of Homeland Security, replacing Secretary Tom Ridge who plans to step down Feb. 1.

Judge Chertoff has been approved by the Senate on three previous occasions and is currently a U.S. Appeals Court judge in Philadelphia. He is considered a “safe” candidate, likely to pass Senate scrutiny, a key characteristic after the White House‘s previous candidate, former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, withdrew after personal information was made public.

At the time of the September 11 attacks, Judge Chertoff was in the Justice Department and became involved as one of the architects of the Patriot act.

If confirmed Chertoff vowed his primary focus as Secretary to be, “promoting our homeland security and, as important, to preserving our fundamental liberties.”

Designing A Child Friendly Kitchen

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Janette Mae Phillips

Weve all heard the statistics; more accidents happen in the home than outside it, and one of the most dangerous places for children is the kitchen! All those hot surfaces, boiling liquids, and sometimes even dangerous chemicals make for a highly risky area for kids. But if youre spending time in the kitchen yourself, when your kids are at home, theyre going to be in and out an awful lot of the time. So how can you make it safe for them (and, incidentally, for you!)?

When the kids are tiny, most parents do the rounds of the home with an arsenal of table tennis ball type fittings to go on sharp corners, ready for when the little ones start to move about independently and those corners seem to beckon like a magnet. Well make sure rugs dont slip easily, put gates on stairways, and have beds for them with protective sides to prevent them falling out in their sleep. But the kitchen, with all its inherent dangers, is a more difficult one to protect.

Granted, most of the worktops are too high for the kids to get at easily, so sharp cutlery, glass items and other objects will be safely out of reach as long as you dont leave them too near the edges or have cloths and chopping boards overlapping the counters so that little hands can pull them down on top of themselves (I know, I have a scar on my right arm to this day from pulling at a teacloth on which a teapot was standing; I guess Im just lucky it didnt tip itself out on to my face…).

But under the counter, behind doors that are easy to open, lurks a plethora of hazardous substances. Its worth installing child-resistant locks on those lower doors; some simple and cheap ones work by only allowing the door to be opened very slowly, which an adult will do but a child wont, and these are simple for even the least expert in DIY to install. You can buy proper locks, but theres always the chance that you or someone else in the family will forget to use them, and the potential for a ghastly family row in which everyone blames everyone elsemuch better avoided, in my book. The best solution, of course, is to move all the items you do not want your child to have access to into a single cupboard, above the countertops, and fit a proper lock on it just in case!

Some of the most hazardous areas for children, though, are around cookers. If you have an oven that sits on the floor, do make absolutely sure that it cant be opened easily by prying hands and, crucially, that the front or edges of the door dont get hot enough to burn delicate skin. If necessary, change the oven to a safer one or, and this is also better for your own back when lifting heavy dishes in and out, have it moved to eye level. You cannot possibly keep an eye on your children for every second, and you simply dont want to take any chances, do you?

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”

Miami of Ohio and Boston College advance to 2010 NCAA men’s ice hockey Frozen Four

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Obviously it was an unbelievable feeling

Miami of Ohio beat the Michigan Wolverines 3–2 at the finals of the NCAA Midwest regional ice hockey tournament Sunday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Miami sophomore forward Alden Hirschfeld scored at 1:54 into the second overtime when his shot from the top of the left face off circle deflected into the goal off the skate of the Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick.

Pat Cannone led the scoring with two power play goals for Miami during regulation. It looked as though Michigan had won the game in the first overtime when Michigan’s forward Kevin Lynch appeared to score. Unfortunately for Michigan the referee blew the whistle calling a penalty just before the puck went in the net. The Miami goaltender Connor Knapp who made 53 saves in the game was named the most outstanding player of the midwest regional tournament.

This was the first multiple overtime game for the Miami of Ohio RedHawks in their 23 years. Miami will be going to the Frozen Four for the second straight year.

It was great to see all those hats on the ice

The Boston College Eagles advanced to the Frozen Four in a shoot out with the Yale Bulldogs. BC defeated Yale 9–7 last night at the finals of the NorthEast regionals in front of 6,054 fans at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

BC forward Cam Atkinson had a hat trick and an assist. Mark Arcobello of Yale also had a hat trick. In an attempt to find a way to stop the Eagles scoring Yale played three different goalies during the game. The sixteen total goals is a NCAA record for a regional tournament game. The previous record was thirteen.

This will be the 22nd time that Boston College has made it to the Frozen Four, it is the ninth for coach Jerry York and their third trip in the past four seasons. BC will face Miami of Ohio in the semifinals on April 8 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
