Early morning fire kills four New York group home residents

Sunday, March 22, 2009

After an early morning fire began, four out of the nine people living at the Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home located in Wells, New York were killed by the blaze. The Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which supervises the home, told the media that the fire started at approximately 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time. Two staff members were at the home at the time, who safely evacuated four of the five survivors.

The names of the residents killed in the fire were not able to be released due to New York’s Mental Hygiene Law, but are able to be identified as two adult men, aged 32 and 52, and two adult women, aged 43 and 60. A 71-year-old male was injured in the fire, and was taken to a hospital in Utica, a nearby city. The other four residents have been relocated to an unnamed group home. Both staff members are also being examined at the hospital.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends of the four victims and to continue to pray for the full recovery of those five people and two staff members who survived this incident. I also want to express my thanks and appreciation for the first responders and volunteers who worked swiftly and diligently to respond to this tragedy,” David Patterson, the governor of New York, said to the media.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union stated that “the blaze appears to have been an electrical fire and the sprinkler system was knocked out immediately.” They also called for “an immediate investigation into the causes of and contributing factors of the fire.”

The New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is currently investigating the causes of the blaze, with help from New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

Cpr Training: It Can Save Lives

It can happen anytime and anywhere. You are at home, at school, at work, at a game or even walking along the street. Someone suddenly keels over – the victim of what appears heart failure. While you can phone 911, it is possible to do something else. This something can actually save the life of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest or stopped breathing. It is called CPR. Training in Illinois and across the United States has been responsible for fewer deaths when this medical situation occurs. In fact, statistics indicate that if more people in this country learned how to perform CPR, the rate of survival after drowning or a cardiac arrest would climb as high as triple the current rate.

What Is CPR?

CPR is short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The cardio refers to the heart and indicates cardio arrest or, as a result of heart failure, a heart attack. This is a technique that was designed to help anyone act quickly to save the life of another individual when tragedy strikes. It can be applied in any emergency where the heart or breathing has stopped. The recipient can be a child or an adult.

CPR training is available for those who want to learn. It is offered by various groups. It can be tailored to meet the needs of a specific type of population ranging from basic (the average individual) to advanced – for nurses and other medical professionals. People from all walks of life – with no medical training, are able to quickly and easily pick up this life saving technique.

Why Should You Take CPR Training?

When the heart stops beating or breathing ceases, it is important to act quickly to get the blood flowing again. By performing CPR, anyone can help the blood again flow to the brain as well as other important body organs. This will help keep the individual alive and prevents brain damage caused by lack of oxygen flowing to the brain. Without it, an individual can suffer from brain damage in a few minutes; die by 10 minutes. CPR keeps them functioning until emergency medical treatment arrives. In other words, CPR performed in Illinois or any other American city can improve the chances of survival. As a result, the reason why you should take CPR training is simple – it saves lives. Failure to learn how to act in the situation leaves you standing on the sidelines feeling helpless while, perhaps someone you truly care about or have worked closely with for years, dies unnecessarily.

CPR Training

If you find yourself in a situation where your company offers CPR training in Illinois, do yourself and everyone you know or may meet a favor. Take it. As it has been stated by various individuals: It is much better to at least do something rather than do nothing. This doubles in meaning when the very something you can learn to do can save that other person’s life.

If you need CPR Training in Illinois, take the time to contact those who know how to help you, your employees and co-workers learn effectively. Contact the professionals at Getz Fire Equipment Company. They are more than experts in providing high quality fire prevention products and services. They are also there to train you in how to save someone’s lives. To discover more visit them online at Getzfire.com.

Minnesota oil pipeline explosion and fire kills two

Friday, November 30, 2007

A major oil pipeline in Minnesota exploded and caught fire, killing two workers. The pipeline carries oil from Saskatchewan, Canada to close to Chicago, United States, representing 16% of America’s total oil imports.

The section of the pipe that exploded was undergoing maintenance at the time to address a pinhole leak first identified three weeks earlier, and patched at the time with a metal sleeve. On Wednesday, the entire section was removed and replaced with a new one. When oil was reintroduced on Thursday morning, oil leaked where the new section joined the pre-existing pipe, triggering the fatal explosion.

The fire was extinguished later the same day.

The line is split between four separate pipes. After the explosion, all four pipes were shut down, resulting in the global price surge, but this subsided for the most part after it became clear that the three undamaged pipelines had returned to normal operation, restoring 80% of the line’s capacity, and that the accident pipe is expected to be back in use in a matter of days.

“There were no problems found in that area where the leak occurred,” reporters were told by Larry Springer, spokesman for Enbridge, the Canadian company that owns the line. High-tech equipment had been through the line in 2006 to check for any signs of problems.

Enbridge identified the deceased as Dave Mussati Jr. and Steve Arnovich, both of whom were contract workers based in Superior, Wisconsin. The damaged section of pipe is in Clearbrook, which is approximately 350 miles Northwest of Minneapolis.

Enbridge metallurgists have been sent to examine the failed section in an effort to determin the cause of the accident. Other Enbridge workers are working to clear spilled oil from the site. It is expected that once this is complete, the pipe will return to service.

Global crude oil prices temporarily spiked by over US$4 per barrel but closed yesterday slightly above original prices.

A Temporary Fix For Water Soaked Bathroom Tiles

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Terry Z. Voster

You may have among the worst situations found by homeowners up for a kitchen or bathroom renovation. You have purchased a new home or pre owned condo, have embarked on a reno project on your bathroom or washroom.

Upon inspecting, or having a home contractor or handyman embark on the job or work estimate of replacing the floor discover the previous owner knowingly to save construction and renovation costs or unwittingly not realized that they were embarking on shady dealings or a poor bargain from a contractor has laid vinyl peel and stick tiles directly over the subfloor of particle board. It may be that its just general home renovations and upgrades or it may be a case that water has leaked out of the plumbing or over time in the washroom from the fixtures. You either have to or want to replace that flooring. What is a fix in this situation to either replace flooring or for fixing that thoroughly soaked sub-floor in the bathroom areas?

It is definitely a case of all possible worlds that is finding vinyl peel-and stick tiles lying over particle board. You can fix the situation yet in many cases experienced home repair tradespeople and handy men will advise you that this is but a short term fix.

In the flooring trades the sub-floor of particle board is often referred to directly as the underlayment. Particle board which some say is among the worst plagues to ever bedevil mankind is in actuality little more than glued compressed sawdust which was a cash cow to its inventor and innovator to its Canadian forest park inventors. A cash cow to the wood mils but not to the average tradesperson or home owner. With what was basically garbage to the wood mills sawdust a throw away item was converted into a building product and basic staple of home and furniture builders the flip side of the equation that although rigid particle-board is rigid has no bend. It can basically lay straight in one piece, be snapped off, but can bend. Worse yet this rigid piece of glued sawdust warps in one giant bend when wet. It cannot be tacked down or held in place when warped. There it bends into the air upwards taking your flooring off the ground. All in al its sole purpose is to provide a smooth surface with which to glue vinyl. Hopefully your particle board has been nailed down to a beefier surface such as good old fashioned plywood which to its credit unlike particle board does have integrity of structure.

Yet what can you do to remedy the situation? For a quick fix you can cut off the damaged sections of underlayment, let the area more than thoroughly dry for several weeks and then replace the damaged tiles. That is if you can find the pattern and a reasonably close in appearance production lot.

The beauty of this project is that for most home owners with a little repair skills under their belt can do this simple repair themselves with a little elbow grease and thus reduce costs. If not it should be a pretty simple low tech job for a relative with the skills or a local home handyman.

A sub floor can present difficulties if soaked with water. Adhesive may have curled at the edges of the tiles themselves. Yet a temporary fix until you call in a professional contractor can be easily done by most home owners whether in a house, condo or vacation cottage.

US unemployment rate reaches 9.8%

Friday, October 2, 2009

Companies in the United States are shedding more jobs, pushing the country’s unemployment rate to a 26-year high of 9.8%.

The US Labor Department said on Friday that employers cut 263,000 jobs in September, with companies in the service industries — including banks, restaurants and retailers — hit especially hard. This is the 21st consecutive month of job losses in the country.

The United States has now lost 7.2 million jobs since the recession officially began in December 2007. The new data has sparked fears that unemployment could threaten an economic recovery. Top US officials have warned that any recovery would be slow and uneven, and some have predicted the unemployment rate will top 10% before the situation improves.

“Continued household deleveraging and rising unemployment may weigh more on consumption than forecast, and accelerating corporate and commercial property defaults could slow the improvement in financial conditions,” read a report by the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, predicting that unemployment will average 10.1% by next year and not go back down to five percent until 2014.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, said that “it’s a very fragile and tentative recovery. Policy makers need to do more.”

“The number came in weaker than expected. We saw a lot of artificial involvement by the government to prop up the markets, and now that that is starting to end, the private sector isn’t yet showing signs of life,” said Kevin Caron, a market strategist for Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.

Also on Thursday, the US Commerce Department said factory orders fell for the first time in five months, dropping eight-tenths of a percent in August. Orders for durable goods — items intended to last several years (including everything from appliances to airliners) — fell 2.6%, the largest drop since January of this year.

The US government has been spending billions of dollars — part of a $787 billion stimulus package — to help spark economic growth. There have been some signs the economy is improving.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday that spending on home construction jumped in August for its biggest increase in 16 years. A real estate trade group, the National Association of Realtors, said pending sales of previously owned homes rose more than 12 percent in August, compared to August 2008.

A separate Commerce Department report said that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, rose at its fastest pace in nearly eight years, jumping 1.3 percent in August.

Other reports have provided cause for concern. A banking industry trade group said Thursday the number of US consumers making late payments, or failing to make payments, on loans and credit cards is on the rise. A survey by a business group, the Institute for Supply Management, Thursday showed US manufacturing grew in September, but at a slower pace than in August when manufacturing increased for the first time in a year and a half.

Stock markets reacted negatively to the reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 41 points in early trading, reaching a level of 9467. This follows a drop of 203 points on Thursday, its largest loss in a single day since July. The London FTSE index fell 55 points, or 1.1%, to reach 4993 points by 15.00 local time.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

About a season ago I shifted to Cambridge, a town in the UK that is well known for having an incredibly high variety of bikers on the streets there is about as much possibility of you being on a street in Cambridge without seeing a motorcyclist as there is of you being on a street in New York City without seeing a yellow cab.

As a car owner, I look for the variety of bikers on the street is somewhat of a hassle the filter paths (which are too filter to perfectly provide both a car and a cyclist) and the great variety of visitors in the town mean that even only one motorcyclist can (at least appear to) considerably slowly your trip. Not only that, but many of the bikers are non-drivers who have little attention of the Road Value or of what motorists can and cannot see they take out suddenly, go through red lighting, pattern without lighting etc.

However, as a cyclist I find the behavior of drivers equally frustrating cars frequently overtake with the bare minimum of space they can get away with (leaving far less than the recommended 3 feet or the as much room as you would allow for a car ); they swerve in and out of cycle lanes (scary stuff when you re a cyclist going faster than slow-moving traffic); and they also very often fail to look for cyclists when pulling out onto roads (only 3 months after being in Cambridge I had a car drive straight into me because the driver had been focusing on looking for oncoming cars rather than bikes and just hadn t seen me).

Any cyclists out there know what a nightmare drivers can be, and any drivers know what a pain in the a** cyclists can be this isn t exactly news right? So what s the point of all my grumbling?

Well, it s this:

This month there have been a lot of incidents reported in the news of well-known cyclists being injured by cars while out on public roads:

On the 7th Nov Bradley Wiggins, Tour de France winner and four-time Olympic champion, was knocked off his bike near a petrol station in Lancashire.

On the 8th Nov Shane Sutton, British Cycling head coach, was involved in an incident while pedalling along the A6 in Manchester.

On the 19th Nov Mark Cavendish, 2011 Road Race world Champion, collided with a car while training in Italy.

Because these road accidents involved high profile individuals they were well reported in the media. However, literally thousands of cycling road incidents occur each year in Britain, with approximately 19,000 cyclists being killed or injured. The RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) reports on its website the following figures for cycling accidents reported in 2011:

107 Killed

3,085 Seriously injured

16,023 Slightly Injured

19,215 Total Incidents

As a nation we are too sedentary and obesity and other non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease) related to inactivity are on the increase. Cycling is a great form of exercise, and when it s used as a means of travelling (e.g. by commuting to work, going to the supermarket, etc.) it is something which can fit relatively easily into a busy schedule, thereby getting around the I have no time argument in fact, in rush-hour traffic it can even save time (not to mention the fact that it s better for the environment than taking the car)!

But who wants to risk their life or risk serious injury by venturing out onto the roads with nothing more than a bell and plastic hat to protect you from the metal behemoths that fly by at 30 or more miles an hour, leaving barely a cat s whisker between? Personally I don t! (although I still do cycle the 3 miles to work and back every day because I just can t face 8 hours sitting at the office desk AND a sedentary commute).

As much as I find getting stuck behind a cyclist frustrating when I m driving, ultimately I think it s we, as drivers, who need to do more to help protect those people who are choosing to benefit their health, the environment and traffic congestion by getting on their bikes, and these are points I think every driver should consider:

1. You are bigger than them! If your car hits a cyclist, the vast majority of the time the worst that can happen to you is that your car gets a dent, whereas the cyclist is very likely to suffer from some form of injury possibly even a life-threatening one.

2. Cyclists need more room than they take up! The roads (especially near the curbs) are full of potholes, debris and other potential obstacles that might cause a cyclist to swerve or wobble if you don t leave them sufficient room as you pass, that small pothole that wouldn t even register to you in your car could cause the cyclist to crash right into you.

3. Not everyone is a world champion BMXer! Many people who choose to cycle regularly are pretty comfortable on a bike and can ride very skillfully, but that certainly isn t true of everyone, and those who are less confident on a bike might need a little more room on the road (even without potholes) than you re currently allowing them. Admittedly you could argue that if you can t ride a bike extremely well you shouldn t be out cycling on a road, but this brings me back to the earlier point that we are too sedentary we shouldn t discourage people from being physically active!

4. Not everyone is aware of the rules of the road! As I mentioned earlier, many cyclists are non-drivers (and this includes children) and may not be aware of the rules of the road (or how a driver thinks/observes). Sure, everyone cycling on a road SHOULD know the Highway Code but the truth is they don t. Is this your responsibility? Well, if the playing field were even I d say no , but given the potentially life-threatening consequences if you hit a cyclist, I kind of think it should be, at least to some extent.

In response to the cycling incidents mentioned earlier, a British Cycling spokesman was quoted as saying that cycle safety should be built into the design of all new roads, junctions and transport projects, rather than being an afterthought . I d add to that, that there should also be more education of cyclists about how to cycle safely on the roads, and possibly even some form of cycling licence . However, this kind of change takes time. In the meantime, all of us when driving should maybe try being a little more considerate of those fragile lives that travel on two wheels and stop treating them as an inanimate nuisance- they are all someone s child, parent, partner, or friend.

So, Don t Think Bike , think LIFE .
