In this article we discuss what duplicate content is, how it can impact SEO performance, and ways to monitor duplicate content on your website.

What is duplicate content?

Duplicate content is any content that appears in more than one place on the internet. This can include content that is exactly the same or that is very similar. Moreover, duplicate content can be an entire page of content or even just an excerpt from a particular page.

Duplicate content is closely related to plagiarism. Whereas, a third party has taken the content and tried to claim it as their own. Just as plagiarism in the academic field can be damaging, so can duplicate content for the online world and websites.

To reiterate, duplicate content is content that is word for word copied and pasted onto a new third party URL or even on the same URL.

Now that we know what duplicate content is, let’s discuss how it can impact the SEO performance of a website.

How does duplicate content impact SEO?

When it comes to indexing, crawling and ranking pages, search engines do not want to spend the resources in looking through duplicate content. Whereas, duplicating exact copies of content will add no value to their users.

Less Organic Traffic and fewer Indexed Pages:

As you can see in Google’s statements above, they want to provide and show ‘distinct information’ to their search engine users. This means that if they discover duplicate content, either on your own website, or on a third party website, you are forcing Google to choose which one is the original.

And making that choice can be difficult for Google sometimes.

For example, if there is three different pages that have the same information on them (this can be because you copy and pasted content, or because a duplicate page has been formed by your server for whatever reason) Google will have to decide which one is the original, more valuable piece of content to index and rank.

Sometimes, Google doesn’t choose right though. Resulting in the sub-optimal page being displayed on their SERPs. When this happens, you will have a difficult time ranking well and thus driving organic traffic to your website.

To go a little deeper into the issues of indexing let’s look at three issues that could take place:

  1. Search engines will struggle to identify which version(s) to include/exclude from their indices
  2. They will have a difficult time in knowing what to do with the various signals and direct link metrics the web page is receiving (trust, authority, anchor text, etc.) and if they should direct it to one page, or separate it between multiple web page versions
  3. The engines won’t know which version or versions of the page they should rank for particular queries

Penalty (Extremely Rare):

Another issue, although rare, that can occur is the website being penalized, which can result in a complete indexing of the website.

This result is quite rare though. And is usually reserved for websites that are scraping content, or copying content directly from one site and placing it on their own, with no citations or references back to the original page.

Penalties like this can be disastrous for websites as they will result in your website being whipped clean from search engines’ indexes. Once this happens, it is nearly impossible to drive any sort of traffic to your website, or ever have the website back in good standing with search engines.

Now that we know how duplicate content will affect a website’s SEO performance, let us discuss what a few different types of duplicate content are.

Examples of duplicate content

In this section we will look at three common duplicate content examples. Two out of our three examples may go unnoticed, or are committed unintentionally by webmasters. This is because certain settings or parameters were set and resulted in a duplicate piece of content being created.

However, that doesn’t mean that website owners don’t purposely create duplicate content. Whereas, Raven Tools conducted a study which showed that around 29% of websites currently do, or have done, some form of duplicate content on purpose.

To ensure your website stays out of that 29%, let’s take a look at three examples or duplicate content.

1. URL variations

Various parameters for your URLs, set by tracking code and analytic code can result in URLs being duplicated.

URL parameters, such as click tracking and some analytics code, can cause duplicate content issues. This can be a problem caused not only by the parameters themselves, but also the order in which those parameters appear in the URL itself.

  • One such example of this is when your parameters set different session ID tags for users. The user ID is then stored in the URL, making the URL different, but still housing the same content as before.
  • Another way URL variations can end up causing problems is with printer-friendly versions of content. Whereas, one URL will have the word ‘print’ in it as an extension and the other doesn’t.

To avoid these common issues, best practices state that when possible, try avoiding any URL parameters as they can easily result in duplicate content. Instead try using scripts to pass on the information instead!

2. HTTP vs. HTTPS

With HTTPS becoming the standard for web pages and their security, sometimes HTTP pages still get created. When this happens, it means that two separate versions of the same web page are being hosted by the website. Whereas, if one page has the prefix http:// and the other has https://, and both of them are live on your website, and discoverable by search engines, you have actually created duplicate content. This type of duplicate content is what confuses search engines as they now have to pick between the two pages to rank.

3. Scraped or copied content

Content that is copied or ‘scraped’ from a website is one of the leading issues when it comes to duplicate content. With this method, websites and content writers will select a keyword and then go through the top ranking pages for the specific query. They will then proceed to copy all of the content, and rewrite/repurpose it or completely copy it and try to pass it as their own.

This method can be done for any type of content including blog posts, web pages, editorials, product pages and news.

Copying content is bad for both your website visitors as well as for search engines. First, by copying content, a website is not providing any new value to the industry or community. They are simply copy and pasting content without bringing any new ideas, conversations or statistics to the overall discussion.

In terms of search engines, they will ultimately notice that the content has been scraped and plagiarized. And, if they notice this enough, they will place penalties on your website, which will successfully stop all organic traffic to your website.

How to monitor duplicate content:

Drive Time Verses J.D. Byrider: Can You Really Buy A Car If You Have Bad Credit?}

On 7/28/2015 my wife Catherine went car hunting. That can be a frustrating experience when you have way less than perfect credit and a small down payment. If you believe all those bad credit, no problem ads I guess you might think purchasing a vehicle is just a walk in the park… Well, guess again! We live in the Indianapolis area so we decided that Cathie should check out two auto dealers that were recommended to us by a number of people and advertise those claims of helping people with bad credit: DriveTime and J.D. Byrider.

My wifes first stop was the J.D.Byrider location on West 38th Street in Indy. They only had around twenty cars to choose from (give or take a few), but I guess that beggars cannot be choosers and having been pre-approved online for a vehicle we figured that we had nothing to lose by having Cathie start there. Our hope was that this would be our first and last stop, but that was not to be. With no explanation of why we had been approved for a car online and had to apply again in person, my wife filled out the paperwork and wait patiently for an answer. She was sure she would be approved since the person who recommended them to her had worst credit than we did and made less money.

After what seemed like forever Cathie was taken to see someone who confronted her in a less than kind way about her bad credit. Well, excuse us! I got very sick in 2006 and ever since then have not been able to work. Having been the primary bread winner, well, you get the idea. Catherine has done her best to make us for the shortfall of funds, but you can only do so much by yourself. None of this seemed to matter to the folks at J.D. Byrider who made my wife sit and listen to our entire rap sheet of bad credit before she finally had enough and asked if she was approved or not. The answer was not.

What really bothered my wife was the fact that the folks at J.D. Byrider seemed to have no interest in actually helping us get a car despite their online claim of helping good people who need credit and a promise to let their customers buy here and pay here. I guess they did not consider us good people and we both felt that the people we were dealing with had discriminated against us. Maybe they did not like the way we looked or were just having a bad day. Either way, my wife left that place crying and was certain she would not be getting a car that day.

With the knowledge that having a car would allow her to keep her present job or even get a much better one Cathie called me and told me her tale of woe asking if she should still try DriveTime? I was very upset at how she had been treated at J.D. Byrider and told her to give DriveTime a try. In the meantime I called J.D. Byrider and asked to speak to a manager. I was determined to discuss my wifes treatment at their hands. I ended up talking to a salesman who just happened to be the first person to answer the phone. He said that that there was no manager available that day. I tried explaining what happened and assured him that we were not going to take that kind of treatment laying down.

I guess it was no surprise that the salesman kept interrupting me and when I brought that to his attention he said I was funny because in his mind it was I who refused to give him a turn to speak. I tried to do just that, but all he did was say that he was not the one who had dealt with my wife when she was there. He quickly adapted a condescending attitude and showed no interest in apologizing for that happened to my wife even after I made it clear that her visit to their location had been the worst consumer experience of her entire life. Given all this it is no surprise that we left a less than stellar review of J.D. Byrider on Yelp! and emailed that review to the Byrider big wigs.

After my wife arrived at DriveTime she was taken to see the Sales Manager at their Lafayette Road location in Indy. She told him what happened at J.D. Byrider and he was shocked. Everyone at DriveTime went out of their way to calm her and tried their best to help get her through the process and to get her approved. The difference was night and day. DriveTime had a huge selection of cars and really seemed to be interested in helping us. The sales manager even spoke to me on the phone to assure me that he would do his best to help us which made me feel better as well. He did and they were kind enough to wave part of the down payment because she fell short by about one hundred dollars. Before long my wife drove off their lot with a beautiful, clean and well-maintained Saturn.

Our experience at J.D. Byrider certainly reinforced the notion that most of those ads that claim to help people with bad credit or in their case help good people get credit are bogus at best. Their attitude was unbelievable and I cannot imagine that anyone who went through what Catherine had to endure there would be happy about it or leave satisfied that they had made even the smallest effort to help us get approved for a car. By contrast,our experience with DriveTime proved that there are still some really good people out there in the world of Used Cars that honestly care about and try to help their potential customers. Possible Complications of IntraLase

Like every system, the IntraLase is also prone to complications even if it was reported that these complications were less noticeable than those associated with microkeratomes. Unfortunately, some surgeons found that patients undergoing Lasik surgery with the IntraLase system may have a further complication consisting of an unusual sensitivity to light. Some reports even claim that this anomaly was found in 1-20% IntraLase patients and it was also found that only one surgeon found a single case of 20%.

The good news is that many practitioners have also claimed that this anomaly is absolutely temporal. That is it lasts only for a short amount of time. This anomaly was cured by eye drops during a couple of weeks.

Practitioners using the IntraLase system claim that side effects of the IntraLase system are temporal whereas the anomalies bring about by the microkeratomes are more serious and may last longer.

Article Marketing: What To Expect When You Start Submitting Articles

We all love immediate gratification – and when we’re starting a marketing plan for our websites, such as one including article marketing, we would certainly love to see the fruits of all our hard work right from Day One!

Realistically though, this is usually not the way it works, and that’s true of any online marketing strategy, not just article marketing.

While it is possible that with one article submission you may see a huge surge of traffic right away if a major ezine picks up your article for publication, for the most part article marketing has a “delayed gratification” element to it.

Fortunately, as with most instances of delayed gratification, the wait is worth the payoff!

When you hear successful article marketers talking about how much traffic they get from the articles they submit or how they’re dominating the search engine rankings thanks to their article submissions, you have to keep in mind that they didn’t get there overnight.

Using articles to drive traffic back to your website isn’t hard, but there are a few things you should know if you want to position yourself for success:

1) How many articles should I submit?

Article marketing is one of those tools that almost anyone can do. You don’t need to be a SEO junkie or a technically advanced internet user. All you need to be able to do is write educational articles in relation to your website’s niche and submit them consistently over the long term.

How much is “consistent”?

While you don’t want to inundate publishers with your articles, you do want to submit a steady amount of articles. I would recommend submitting at most 1-8 articles a month.

That number is pretty doable most of us can find the time to write at least one quality article a month, and even more if we put our minds to it!

By submitting a limited number of articles a month, you can focus on quality, rather than quantity – the results from a few quality articles will generally always far outweigh the results from lots of low quality articles.

2) How long does it take to see results?

When you start article marketing consistently (submitting 1-8 articles a month), you can expect to see results within 3-4 months.

Why does it take that long?

Google doesn’t update their rankings on a daily or even a monthly basis–usually their ranking adjustments are done every 3 months or so.

So, no matter what link building or traffic driving method you’re using, if you were hoping to see an increase in search engine ranking and more traffic from Google, you need to be a little patient.

Don’t submit one or two articles, and then a week later say, “Ugh–this isn’t working! I quit.”

Take a clue from the experts who are seeing the results you’re after–commit to doing your article marketing consistently over a long span of time (ideally over the entire lifetime of your website), and know that it will likely take 3-4 months to see results from your efforts.

3) How can I measure my results?

There are 4 main ways to measure your results with article marketing:

*An increase in traffic to your website.

*An increase in backlinks

*An increase in PageRank

*An increase in your search engine ranking for your keyword terms

Obviously, in order to measure your results using these factors, you want to take a baseline of each of these stats before you start article marketing, so you’ll have a basis of comparison.

Remember though, when you take your initial baseline of these 4 elements, you will not see a change right away. It will take 3-4 months from the time your article marketing campaign begins to see changes in your baselines.

The biggest obstacle I see with folks not seeing the results they were looking for with article marketing is not the actual writing and submitting of articles it’s managing their expectations.

It’s natural for people to want to see results right away, but you know better now!

Article marketing is an extremely effective way to build links and drive traffic to your website over the long term, so don’t let unreal expectations spoil your ability to stick with it.
