5-year old American girl dies after visiting the dentist

Friday, September 29, 2006

Diamond Brownridge, a 5-year old girl from Chicago, Illinois, has died after a visit to the dentist. Children’s Memorial Hospital officials say that the girl was rushed to the hospital when she never woke up after being sedated for a dental procedure. She had been in a coma, on life support, since being admitted to the hospital early in the weekend.

“She passed very peacefully and beautifully,” said the hospital in a statement that the family issued.

Ommettress Travis, the mother of the girl, was asked not to remain inside the room while dentists were operating on the girl to repair two cavities and to have at least two caps replaced. Travis says after thirty minutes she was asked to come back in and found Brownridge not breathing, in the dentist chair.

Hicham Riba, a specialist and professional in anesthesia, who was also licensed, was the dentist in charge of the procedure.

“My family and I are so sad. May God bless Diamond and her family. Every time you have a tragedy like this, you pray more. I don’t think I will ever go back to a normal life after an experience like this,” Riba said in a statement on Wednesday, September 28.

According to the family, the girl had been given at least a triple dose of medicine that sedated her. Those drugs include: nitrous oxide gas, a single dose of an “oral agent” and an IV.

A judge has ordered that all equipment and materials used during the operation be protected and examined. The girl’s medical records have also been ordered to be examined.

There is no word on whether or not any charges will be filed against Riba or any of the dentist’s staff.

Diet For Sciatica In Ayurveda

What is Sciatica?

Sciaticais a common type of pain affecting the sciatic nerve extending from the lower back through hips, buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one leg at a time. It occurs commonly when there is any herniated vertebral disc, any bone spur on the vertebral column or there is the narrowing of the spine.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched usually by the herniated disc or bone spur on the vertebral column. In rare cases, it is seen that the nerve is compressed because of tumors or in diseases like diabetes it is seen more commonly.

There are certain risk factors for sciatica as follows-

 • Age – Age-related issues as a herniated spine or bone spur are the most common causes.
 • Obesity –Excess body weight can contribute to the stress on the spine which can trigger sciatica.
 • Diabetes – in this condition due to nerve damage changes seen commonly, sciatica is seen more frequently.
 • Occupation – Occupations which include carrying heavy loads drive a vehicle for a longer period are seen to have chances of getting sciatic pain.
 • Prolonged sitting – People who have a sedentary lifestyle or who sit for a longer period are commonly seen affected by sciatica.
 • Muscle spasms in the back.
 • Pregnancy
 • Spondylolisthesis.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Common symptoms of sciatica include –

 • Lower back pain
 • Hip pain
 • Constant pain on one side of the leg.
 • Pain is unbearable making one difficult to stand.
 • Tingling pain down the leg.

The Hallmark sign of Sciatica is the pain radiates from your lower spine to your buttock and down the leg. There is discomfort along the nerve pathway.

This pain can vary from a sharp cutting pain to mild pain. It also feels like an electric shock sometimes. Sitting for a prolonged period can aggravate the symptom.

Some of the people have numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg.

Diagnosis for Sciatica

Personal checkups during the routine examination may reveal the condition. There are few imaging tests to confirm the diagnosis as –

 • Xray – Xray of the spine is can reveal the bone spur.
 • MRI – MRI spine helps to find out the details images of the spine and soft tissues surrounding helping to diagnose the case.
 • CT Scan – it is used to do diagnose the case finally.
 • EMG (Electromyography) – this test measures the electric impulse produced by nerves and the responses of your muscles.

Conventional Treatment of Sciatica

There are various conventional methods for the treatment of sciatica like as –

 • Physiotherapy – it includes exercises to correct the posture, strengthen the muscles supporting the back improving the flexibility.
 • Medications – The types of drugs in sciatica are anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxants, narcotics, etc.
 • Steroidal Injection is also suggested in some cases where the nerve root is also involved.
 • Surgery – it is the option usually reserved for patients when the compressed nerve causes prominent symptoms like loss of bowel or bladder control, or the pain do not subside though taking pain killers. Surgery can remove those bone spurs or the portion of the herniated disk that is pressurizing on the nerve.

Homeopathic remedies for Sciatica

Homeopathy does not treat a symptom but considers the unique set of symptoms as a whole to address the root cause of the problem. The Homeopathic remedies for sciatica are believed to enhance the structure and functions of the nerves. Homeopathic remedies for Sciatica are –

 • Hypericum –Studies suggest that this homeopathic remedy may reduce spasms in the lower lumbar region. [Source:]
 • Aconitum Napellus – Studies suggest that this homeopathic remedy may possess anti-inflammatory properties. [Source:]
 • Colocynthis – Studies suggest that this Homeopathic remedy may relieve the pain caused due to pressure on the nerve ending. [Source:]

Preventive measure for sciatica

Some types of Sciatica like associated with pregnancy, degenerative disk disease, cannot be prevented. In some cases, it is possible to prevent to an extent by taking certain measures like

 • Maintaining good posture.
 • Quitting smoking.
 • Maintaining a healthy body weight.
 • Regular exercises like yogasanas, breathing exercises.
 • Keeping safe from fall.

Ayurvedic Diet Suggested

Recommended foods are –

 • Brown rice, whole wheat, green gram (moong), horse gram(kulatha), sesame(til), Louki(white guard), ginger, garlic, milk, and dairy products.
 • An adequate amount of potassium is also essential for managing Sciatica as it provides toughness to the muscles and helps in neuro-transmission. Potassium-rich foods are green leafy vegetables, avocados, white beans, potatoes, mushrooms, banana, Salmon fish.
 • Chicken, meat, and eggs should be consumed moderately as they cause constipation.

Foods to be avoided are –

 • Green peas, karela(bitter gourd), Frozen meat, fermented foods, cold drinks, cold water too.

Ayurvedic dietary tips

 • Take 5-6 pieces each of garlic and clove in a 10 ml sesame oil, heat on low flame for 5 minutes, allow to cool a bit and then apply it on your back with a gentle massage every day at bedtime. This remedy offers excellent relief from back pain, stiffness, and lumbago.
 • Freshly prepared ginger and lemon juice with black salt is good to relieve backache.

Home care for Sciatica

Self-care at home is necessary to manage the pain factor in sciatica. Stretching or activities that place additional strain on the back must be avoided.

Sleeping one-sided with a pillow taking in between the knees is seen as comfortable in many cases.

Heat and ice therapy alternating can provide instant relief of sciatic nerve pain. Ice pack helps to reduce the inflammation, while heat increases the blood flow to the painful areas giving some relief. Apply an ice pack to the painful area for 15 minutes once every hour and then apply heat for 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.

Proper body posture is found essential in helping to relieve the pain many times. Varying the posture after every 15 to 20 minutes is also beneficial.

CSX freight train derails in Oneida, New York, tank car explodes

Monday, March 12, 2007

A CSX freight train traveling from Buffalo to Selkirk derailed in Oneida, New York.

No injuries have yet been reported as a result of the accident. It is not yet known what caused the accident; CSX and NTSB officials are investigating.

Twenty six of the train’s 79 cars derailed around 7:00 a.m. local time; the derailment led to the explosion of at least one tank car carrying propane. Two other cars are known to contain hazardous materials. As many as seven cars have been reported as burning.

As a precaution, 23 miles (37 kilometers) of the adjacent Thruway have been closed between Syracuse and Verona. Authorities have ordered a complete evacuation for a one-mile radius around the derailment site, including a jail and two elementary schools. Amtrak’s Empire Service between Albany and Syracuse is suspended and Lake Shore Limited between Syracuse and Chicago is also affected; passengers on these routes are being bused around the affected area.

At the time of the accident the train had a two-man crew and was traversing a section of track that has a 60 mile per hour (MPH) speed limit. The train crew were not injured; it is not yet known what speed the train was traveling when the accident occurred.

Polaroid goes bankrupt

Friday, December 19, 2008

Camera company Polaroid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The firm, famed for the introduction of instant photography, says alleged fraud by the founder of their parent group is to blame.

Owned since 2005 by Petters Group Worldwide, Polaroid says that the group’s founder Tom Petters is “under investigation for alleged acts of fraud that have compromised the financial condition of Polaroid.” Authorities believe Petter, currently in police custody, was running fraud worth £3 billion, something he denies.

Petters Group, itself, filed for bankruptcy in October. Both firms now face restructuring, which Polaroid is confident won’t affect daily operations — in fact, the company is “planning for new product launches in 2009,” and claims to have “entered bankruptcy with ample cash reserves sufficient to finance the company’s reorganization under Chapter 11.”

Polaroid has further said that employees will be paid without interruption, and that while members of Petters Group are under investigation for fraud, Polaroid’s management is not. The company, based in Minnesota, also has subsidiaries which will enter bankruptcy with it.

Skeletons found under home in Hertfordshire

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Catherine McGuigan, a resident in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, UK, found skeletons from over a century ago buried under her dining room.

She had hired builders for an extension for her cottage, where she has lived for eleven years, and at the beginning of April they found human bones in the ground.

Her cottage was built over a burial ground; from 1697 to 1820 the land was owned by the Religious Society of Friends. In the 1600s, members of the society, better known as Quakers, were persecuted for their beliefs and so were not allowed to be buried in consecrated church grounds. Instead burials, which were also sometimes for others not recognised as parishioners – such as homeless people, often took place in the countryside.

The Daily Mail states in its April article that the Religious Society of Friends have advised McGuigan that she “must cremate” the bodies, however Quakers have written an open letter to the Daily Mail, informing that for Quakers, there is “no specific advice on the disposal of bodies”, and that they had never expressed an opinion on how the discovered skeletons should be buried.

The cremation was rumoured to cost up to £32,000 – an £800 quote for cremation of a single body multiplied by 40, however as yet only ten bodies have been discovered.

The builders originally thought the bones were pieces of pipe, and McGuigan has now ordered coffins and is looking to holding a mass cremation or a burial in a nearby field.

The Stages Of Spinal Stenosis In The Back

By Patrick Foote

Spinal stenosis in the back or neck involves a narrowing of the tiny spaces within the spinal column, a condition which may or may not cause compression of surrounding spinal nerves. Spinal stenosis can be caused by injury, a tumor, or a congenital defect, but the most common cause is the natural process of degeneration that comes with age. As the elements of the spinal anatomy break down, they can shift, rupture, ossify, or bulge, any of which can intrude on the narrow spaces (foramina) of the spinal column, which forms the protective armor around the spinal cord and its nerve roots. Many people may have spinal stenosis in their back or neck without even knowing it because the narrowed canal is usually not, in and of itself, painful. However, if bone, disc material, or connective tissue comes into contact with a nearby spinal nerve root, symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness may be produced in the back, neck, and or extremities.

When Acute Symptoms Become Chronic

As with any health condition, spinal stenosis in the back or neck will affect each patient differently and can range from mild to severe:

— Asymptomatic spinal stenosis – This is the mildest form of stenosis because no neural compression is involved. It is possible, however, that the anatomical abnormality that is causing the stenosis is also giving rise to mild symptoms. For instance, a herniated disc may cause localized pain because the layers of the outer disc wall contain some nerve fibers that may become inflamed when exposed to the jelly-like core material seeping out of the torn disc.

— Acute spinal stenosis – If a spinal nerve does become compressed, the individual may feel pain that remains localized at the site of compression, though it is more common to experience radiating pain that travels along the entire path of the affected nerve. Symptoms that appear in a region of the body far from the site of nerve compression in the spine are called ‘referred’ symptoms, and can make stenosis fairly difficult to diagnose without the help of thorough examination. Radiating pain may feel warm or electric in nature. Acute pain generally occurs intermittently and can be managed with conservative treatment techniques such as medication and physical therapy.

— Chronic spinal stenosis – Chronic stenosis is continual pain that has lasted longer than three months. By the time your discomfort becomes chronic, your symptoms will likely have evolved to include pain, weakness, tingling, loss of feeling, or, in the worst-case scenario, muscular paralysis. A compressed spinal nerve that remains untreated for long enough can actually develop permanent damage, which may result in regions of numbness and weakness in the back, neck, and/or extremities.

When Is It Time to Consider Stenosis Surgery?

While there are a variety of surgical treatments available for spinal stenosis, this course of action should generally only be considered as a last resort after all other conservative, non-surgical treatment options have been tried. If you have tried a comprehensive regimen of treatment for three months or longer and have seen little to no improvement in your symptoms, your physician may suggest that you consider spine surgery. The decision to undergo this elective surgery is completely up to you and you should never feel pressured or rushed into any procedure unless you’ve been told that your condition is a medical emergency.

If you are considering elective surgery for your stenosis-related back or neck pain, don’t be afraid to get second, third, or even fourth opinions from spinal stenosis specialists. Ask each one which type of stenosis surgery he or she would recommend, why they are recommending it, and if there are any additional non-invasive treatments that they would suggest first. Conduct your own research into the different types of surgical procedures that are available so that you will be able to have informed discussions with each doctor about the risks, benefits, and projected recovery periods of each type of procedure.

Jawbone found in Aruba is not Natalee Holloway’s

Thursday, November 25, 2010

A jawbone found in Aruba is not that of missing American Natalee Holloway, who was a recent high school-graduate at the time of her disappearance. Officials confirmed the news after Dutch scientists completed tests on the bone. The jawbone, which also had a wisdom tooth with it, was found by an American tourist close to the Phoenix Hotel. A second bone had also been found by another tourist earlier this month.

The bone was sent to the Netherlands Forensic Institute where scientists completed tests. They compared the bone to dental records given to them by Natalee’s father, from which they confirmed the the bone was not that of Natalee, although it was human. It was said to be unlikely that the bone was Holloway’s as there is no physical evidence that she was murdered.

Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.

Taco Stein, the Aruban Solicitor General, released a statement after the announcement was made. He commented on the speed of the identification; he said that they had quickly ruled out Holloway because her records had shown that she had her wisdom teeth previously removed.

Tim Miller, the Director of the Texas EquuSearch, released a statement after talking to Natalee’s father. He said “Dave [Natalee’s father] has been in contact with Aruban authorities and spoke with FBI this morning, the agent working the case. Dave believes it is Natalee.”

An attorney for Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, released a statement saying “Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.” He commented on the Aruban authorities saying that “Apparently Aruban prosecutors were more sensitive to media concerns than the painful vigil of a mother.”

Natalee Holloway disappeared on the island in 2005 while on a school trip. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with three men, one of which was later identified as Joran van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was detained twice by police but has never been charged with Holloway’s disappearance. He is currently in Peru facing a different murder charge. Aruban authorities have said that they are checking neighboring islands to find a match for other missing persons.
