10 Tips To Write A College Level Essay

By Felix Chesterfield

1) Pick a good topic. The worst thing you can do when writing a college essay is to be lazy and pick a topic on a whim. Bad or uninteresting topics lead to bad and uninteresting papers. If it is not a topic that you, the writer, care about, how can you expect your reader to care?

2) Focus on thesis. Every essay needs a thesis, which is a sentence that represents your main point (usually located in the first or second paragraph). What are you trying to say with your essay? Picking a good thesis is the hardest part of writing a college essay, but the good news is that everything is easier from that point forward. Every subsequent point flows from that thesis and should either support or provide a tangential anecdote to that main point.

3) Outline your paper. Some authors can just sit down and write and let the story take them wherever. However, most writers do not function well in this fashion. Create an outline that will give your paper an overall direction, then all you have to do is begin filling in the gaps.

4) Use topic sentences. In an essay, there is no reason to surprise the reader. Topic sentences are like mini-theses. Topic sentences are where the first sentence in each primary paragraph serves as the main point that paragraph is going to prove. Using topic sentences help keep your essay organized.

5) Quotes make the point. The readers (often your professors) are not going to be willing to take your word for many facts or points that present. Using quotes from other materials can go a long way to making your paper come across as more competent than your classmates.

6) Pick relevant sources. Of course, random quotes do nothing to push your argument. You must pick quality and relevant sources to back your statements. That would be articles, papers, interviews, etc. from qualified individuals who would be in the know. Sorry students, that does not mean Wikipedia! But that does mean feel free to peruse Wikipedias sources for items you can vulture.

7) Use citations. When you do quote, paraphrase, or offer any idea that is not your own, make sure to use proper citations. There are multiple ways to cite sources (MLA, Chicago style, et al). Make sure to ask your instructor which way they prefer.

8) Use proper spelling and grammar. This should go without saying, but many would be shocked how many students turn in essays with simple errors in grammar and/or spelling. Spell check is a nice word processing feature, but do not depend on it to be the end-all-be-all.

9) Proofread your paper. This is the best way to catch grammatical errors and also to make sure that your paper reads the way you want it to. If you proofread your paper with an open mind, 99% of the time you will find some things you can improve on after the fact. This is a good thing.

10) Learn from your mistakes. The fact of the matter is that you will not always write the perfect essay. When you get your paper back, keep an open mind and find areas where you can improve. If youre not aiming to improve as a writer, whats the point?

Students raise record amounts of money during Christmas fundraiser at Benet Academy, Illinois

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Students at Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, United States raised record amounts of money this year during their Christmas Drive fundraiser.

The annual two-week event is aimed at promoting the Christmas spirit in helping the poor and needy. Coordination of the fundraiser is a joint effort by the faculty and three students organizations—Student Government, National Honor Society (NHS), and Outreach. Donations from previous years have allowed Outreach to provide food and Christmas gifts to dozens of families during the holiday season. NHS in the past has provided blankets, winter gear, and toys to local families as well.

A semi-formal dance held on Dec. 5 kicked off the Christmas Drive this year. Two weeks of in-school fundraising efforts ensued, including several no-uniform days and Benet’s traditional Penny Wars. In that four-day activity, the four grade levels competed against each other to see who can collect the most pennies. Nickels, dimes, and quarters were allowed but had negative value in the class total. The seniors won this contest, allowing them to have a no-uniform day on Dec. 11. Other activities such as bake sales and a beard-growing contest raised money as well.

During an all-school assembly on Friday, the last day of the drive, Student Government President Kyle Marinko announced that preliminary calculations put the amount of donations at US$53,392.82, a record for the school. Last year’s drive collected approximately US$42,000. A final total has not been officially announced, since Student Government officials continue to count additional donations that have been received.

Making Postcards Work For You

By Robert Johnston

“When working for a real estate office, I had to create and mail thousands of postcards over the course of just a few months. Postcard marketing seemed to be the office’s main avenue of advertising to top clients, and these mailings seemed to create more responses than flyers or personalized letters. It didn’t take me long to notice the benefits of using postcards to reach a client base.

1. They are low-cost and easy to print. Although most postcard printing companies charge very little per postcard, especially if the order is a large amount, you could also print your own. Oftentimes I printed postcards four to a page and cut them out using the company’s laser-guided paper cutter. This did take more time and effort, though, so in order to save time, many times I outsourced the printing. Most printing businesses will have your order ready in only a couple of days.

2. They can be made into several sizes, although the standard size only costs $.26 to mail. They are also easy to create. You can choose to have the return address, mailing address, and even stamps printed on the card. Some companies will even mail them for you.

3. Prospects don’t have to open postcards like they do flyers or letters. It’s easy for someone to just glance at the postcard, giving your advertising a chance. Also, your database will be up-to-date because each wrong address will be returned to your office.

So, I’ve sold you on using this marketing strategy, but now how do you use it successfully? Just follow the simple rules below, and your business could be seeing more results than ever expected.

1. Make sure that your mailings are only to the most potential clients. Sending mailings out to everyone on your database could end up costing you more money than is worth the return. Don’t send a postcard advertising a $25,000 sports car to prospects who have a budget of $14,000 and need a sedan.

2. Postcards don’t need to be too showy, just irresistible enough that the client can’t help skimming at least the headline. Use just that, a headline with a brief message calling them to action. Choosing to use only three to four colors will help it feel more friendly and warm rather than pushy and overwhelming.

3. Make them two-sided. Put your message and call-to-action on one side and your contact information, extra details, and directions on the second side. Many times color is only necessary on the front, which saves on cost. Most print companies will total each side separately.

4. Many times, creating a deadline gives customers the push that they need to contact your business. Send your postcards with specific dates in mind, an open house, for instance. This also allows for your postcard to double as a ticket for giveaways or discounts, which cuts your cost.

Give postcard marketing a try. Experiment to find what works best for your area of business, and prepare to be surprised by the ease, efficiency, and results of this old-fashioned advertising

FBI begins widespread financial probe of 26 firms

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The FBI is investigating 26 firms and 1,400 individuals involved in the US financial crisis for fraud and “sub-prime lending practices”. Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae and AIG are among the firms being scrutinized after recently receiving federal bailouts.

Investigators, who are cooperating with the IRS, Postal Office, and other federal offices to complete their investigation, are concerned that major corporations may have also forced or bribed ratings agencies to favor them.

The probe, which is in early stages, began eight months ago when the FBI began taking a close look at the mortgage industry and widespread irresponsible loaning practices. At least one corporation has been raided, but so far no evidence of fraud has been found.

The FBI has questioned executives of each of the firms closely, and arrested two in June. An anonymous source told The Times that the firms had been ordered to “hold all papers and e-mails under lock and key” as the FBI scours the finances of each firm.

Many of the companies and individuals being investigated are at the center of the nationwide financial crisis and controversial bailout plans, and have been widely blamed for the country’s financial crisis. The investigation has come at a time when the eyes of many in the US and around the world are turned towards the financial markets, as Congress and politicians scramble to fix the crisis while the election date looms closer.

Officials told CNN that it would be a long time before the investigations were finished, adding a warning: “Don’t expect indictments tomorrow or next week or next month”.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes Antofagasta, Chile

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Authorities in Chile say at least two people have been killed and more than 100 injured after a powerful earthquake struck in the north, sending terrified residents into the streets and cutting power to some of the country’s copper mines. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 15:40:53 UTC.

Officials said two women were killed Wednesday when their houses in the town of Tocopilla collapsed during the 7.7 magnitude earthquake. They also said another person may have died in a tunnel collapse there, which has trapped some 50 workers.

Government spokesperson Ricardo Lagos said “They will be evacuated by the Navy via the ocean. As far as we know there are no injured or dead [among the workers].”

The USGS said the quake was centered west of the town of Calama. It was felt as far away as the Chilean capital, Santiago, and neighboring Peru and Bolivia.

Television images showed cars crushed under the concrete awning of a hotel in Antofagasta, 170 kilometers south of the epicenter.

The police chief of Arequipa, Hernan Tamayo said, “People ran out into the streets because of how prolonged the quake was. There was a lot of alarm but no material or human damage.”

The quake was followed by six aftershocks with magnitudes of up to 5.7. Additionally, the quake triggered a tsunami warning which was later lifted.

In Tocopilla, 115 people were injured. Mayor Luis Moyano said about 1,200 houses had been flattened. “Today, the people of Tocopilla are going to have to sleep in the streets,” he said in a radio address.

In total, 3,000 homes have been destroyed in Chile, according to the Housing Minister. The government has airlifted hundreds of portable homes to provide shelter.

In August, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Peru, killing about 540 people and injuring more than 1,000 others. The southern port city of Pisco was one of the areas devastated by the powerful quake, which lasted two minutes.
