25 Music Jobs That Most People Don’t Know About

By Rita Henry

You may have heard that music jobs are almost impossible to find, especially if you’re young and just starting out. While it may be true that few aspiring musicians will reach the top of the charts, there are hundreds of thousands of music jobs available. Some are for performers, some for teachers, and some for support staff for musicians and performers. Musicians and others in the music industry may work in production, performance, promotion, and education – even medicine. I promised you 25 music jobs that most people don’t know about – but that’s not technically true. Many of these are jobs that people know about – but don’t consider when they think of ‘music jobs’. Ready for the list? Here we go:

Music Jobs for Songwriters:

A Staff Songwriter works for a record or media company and writes songs for the artists signed by the label.

A Freelance Songwriter writes and markets his or her own songs. Your hours are your own, but you’ll have to work a lot of them to get your songs heard.

A Lyricist writes just the words to songs. He may team up with a composer, or be teamed up with one by a music production company.

A Jingle Writer writes those catchy ads that you hear on the television and radio – you know, the ones that get stuck in your head for days. A jingle writer may not become a famous household name – but he or she will always find work.

Music Jobs in Publishing:

A Music Publisher finds and acquires the copyrights to songs with the intent of licensing or selling them to record companies and musicians.

A Copyright/Licensing Administrator ($20,000 – $60,000) manages the licensing and copyrights for a music publishing company.

A Music Editor ($20,000 – $60,000) works closely with the composer to document, organize and time cues for the musicians in a project.

A Notesetter ($15,000 – $50,000) transcribes music from audio to the page.

Music Jobs in the Record Business

An A&R Coordinator (artist and repertoire) finds talent for a record company to sign. His boss is the A&R Administrator, a position that includes planning budgets for artists, managing reps and coordinators and monitoring the expenses on production.

Public Relations music jobs range from assistant publicist to director of public relations. The PR department is responsible for getting the names of the artists on a record company label out in front of the public often. Pay ranges from nothing for an intern to three figures for highly experienced public relations managers.

An Artist’s Relations Representative is responsible for maintaining communication and cooperation between the record company and an artist or band.

A Promotional staffer works with radio stations and video stations to get airplay for a label’s records.

Campus representatives are promotional agents – but they work directly to promote a record label’s products to college students and music retailers. Working as a campus representative is a great way to get your foot in the door at a record label.

Music Jobs in Education

A music teacher teaches music to classes from pre-school through college, with duties varying depending on the age of the classes. In the elementary grades, the music teacher may concentrate on teaching music appreciation and theory, with some teaching of instruments and performance theory. By high school, the job duties are more varied, and may include directing student performances and organizing and directing a band or choir.

A Music Director or Supervisor is responsible for managing and setting policy for music instructors hired by the school department.

Music Jobs in the Ministry may include part time work as an organist to full time work directing a professional choir and the entire music worship for a parish or citywide.

Legality of NSW traffic and parking fines to be tested in court

Sunday, June 18, 2006

The legality of speeding and parking fines in New South Wales, Australia is set to be tested in court this week. A lawyer from Sydney will challenge the authority of the state’s infringement processing bureau to issue fines for speeding and parking offences.

The lawyer claims that when the NSW government moved control of the bureau from the NSW Police to the Office of State Revenue in October 2001, the government failed to make correct legislative changes. He claims that all fines issued since the move are invalid.

The basis of the case revolve around whether or not the infringement processing bureau has powers to issue penalty notices (fines) under NSW law.

The bureau said that the case would only be relevant to fines which are disputed by a person in court. The bureau said that only five per cent of fines are challenged.

“People who did not elect to go to court and have paid their infringement notice will not be affected by any decision, so the issue of refunds does not arise,” a statement by the Office of State Revenue said.

For the 2004/2005 financial year, the infringement processing bureau recorded revenues of AUD$158.7 million from fines.

NSW Opposition leader Peter Debnam said the government has once again failed to write legislation correctly. “The bottom line with this thing is that the Government simply hasn’t done its homework. We see this time and time again, legislation going through parliament, and it ends up costing tax payers a fortune,” he said.

Controversy follows after Canadian PM skips vote for hockey game

Monday, October 9, 2006

Controversy is being expressed over Stephen Harper’s decision to skip the House of Commons vote for the Kyoto Protocol on climate change on Wednesday for a hockey game at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Liberal MPs say that this reveals Mr. Harper’s true attitude toward the environment. “It shows the importance he gives to Kyoto and climate change,” said Liberal MP Pablo Rodriguez. “What kind of example does that send to Canadians?”

Harper was with his ten-year-old son Ben cheering on for the Toronto Maple Leafs and sat in seats in the platinum level of the Air Canada Centre, next to Larry Tanenbaum, head of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Leafs. Also seated with Mr. Tanenbaum was Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and his wife, Terri.

“You know I’m dead meat if I make those kind of predictions in hockey,” said Harper, who must juggle support from voters in six Canadian NHL cities. “I think Ben will be cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Harper told The Canadian Press. “That’s his team.”

Harper and his son met with the members of the Toronto team after the game was finished.

Opposition MPs say that “the decision to put pucks over Parliament shows that environmental issues rate as a low priority for Mr. Harper, who had no other reason to be in Toronto the day he attended the NHL season opener between the Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators.”

Members of Parliament and the prime minister are not required to attend votes in the House of Commons and routinely miss them when dealing with other business. If Mr. Harper was there, his vote would not have changed the outcome.

The PM will be writing a whole book on the history of the game. But demands of his day job have slowed down the project.

New Zealand National party pays back owed GST

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The New Zealand National party has announced that it will pay back the GST (Goods and Services Tax) it owes to five different advertisers, all television stations, by buying advertising time for the several different charities. The advertisements will appear on the owed media outlets. They have decided with the current path is it would “unlawful” to pay back the GST normally.

The GST amounted to NZ$112,000.

National’s original plan of getting a one time bill passed that it would allow them to pack the owed GST to the media outlets was ditched in favour of this new one. “With the prospect of legislation diminishing, it’s time to accept that National cannot go down that path,” Judy Kirk, president of the National party, said.

If National was to pay back the GST, they would be breaking the law by going over the electioneering cap set by the Broadcasting Act.

The owed media companies are TVNZ, TV3 and Sky Television. It also includes Sky’s free-to-air channel, Prime.

Ms Kirk said: “We want to get some closure on the matter and have taken extensive legal advice on our options… We have secured clear advice that it would be unlawful to pay the five outstanding media creditors, and that it would be unlawful for them to accept payment. We do not wish to break the law, and nor do we wish to place our creditors in the position of breaking the law.”

“…we will purchase the media advertising time directly from broadcasters and ask that they allocate it amongst the range of charities currently supported by each,” Ms Kirk said.

National said that their error on not paying for the GST did not effect the outcome of the election, unlike the Labour party’s overspending.

Stay Cool This Summer Routine Maintenance Of Your Automotive Vehicle’s Air Conditioning

Submitted by: Steamboat L. Salter

Summers coming with its incessant heat. Now is the time and season for routine servicing or your air conditioning system of your vehicles be they cars, trucks, vans or S.U.V. s. Why wait for spring, or in this case summer?

It can be said that overall that the most important aspect of air-conditioning service is the maintenance of pure and adequate charge of refrigerant in your air conditioning system. A refrigeration system cannot function properly if a significant percentage of the charge is lost. Leaks are common as a result of the severe vibration and vibrations that both a frequent and common occurrence with most vehicles in everyday or worse hazardous and more default driving conditions on the roads and byways of the USA, Canada and Mexico. The jolts and bumps along the roadsides can easily cause sufficient cracking or loosening of the air condition fittings. As a result the extreme operating pressures of the air conditioning system force the vital refrigerant out. It s all very similar to a pop bottle being left open and the fizz disappearing.

Looked another or alternate way, the problem and situation can be understood by considering what happens to the air conditioning system as it would operate with a steady and continuous leak. Refrigerant fluid leaks out, what is left begins to boil or vaporize. There is not enough refrigerant to complete the system, as if it a flow of liquid in a constant and regular ongoing cycle. The refrigerant fluid cannot flow in a constant and consistent manner in a regular flow. Thus the air conditioner cannot take away the heat , it cannot do its job and you now remain sweltering in a hot , rather than cool vehicle , much as would expect and like to.

Whets the answer preventative maintenance of your air conditioning system long before summer s heat arrives. Simple as that.

However it used to be a simple matter to simply visit your local mechanical garage, service station, automotive factory dealer or even a big box large retail store. It used to be the key word is used to be as in the past, not the present, a most simple matter and procedure for a top up of air conditioning refrigerant. The process was to add additional air conditioning refrigerant to your sealed air conditioning system much like you would add air, from a service station or auto dealer s compressor air hose, simply to pump up your tire to adequate and safe vehicle tire air pressures.

Not so today. With concerns about the Ozone layer and layers high up in the atmosphere and the knowledge that loose fluoro-hydrocarbons in the atmosphere (in this case your evaporated and released air conditioning fluids), this is all a very different and very serious matter. It s not a simple matter as before, and indeed a very serious offense if the procedure is not properly by trained and accredited mechanical auto refrigerant staff along with highly specialized auto air conditioning refrigerant equipment and tools.

The summary is that now is the time to take your vehicle with its air conditioning system, for a routine inspection and testing at a reputable and accredited automotive repair facility be it a garage, service station or automotive factory outlet where they have the trained accredited staff and proper equipment, as well as the luxury of time to inspect your auto s air conditioning system and bring it back to snuff it need be all long before the hot sweltering summer. Why roast in the hot summer weather in your care when you can be safely driving in comfort? Take the time to visit your garage, service station or auto dealer now.

Wikinews interviews Joe Schriner, Independent U.S. presidential candidate

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Journalist, counselor, painter, and US 2012 Presidential candidate Joe Schriner of Cleveland, Ohio took some time to discuss his campaign with Wikinews in an interview.

Schriner previously ran for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, but failed to gain much traction in the races. He announced his candidacy for the 2012 race immediately following the 2008 election. Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews reporter William Saturn? talks with Schriner and discusses his campaign.

Pakistan President Musharraf in Kabul for talks

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

The President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf is in Kabul for a two-day visit during which he is scheduled to hold talks with his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai. The talks are expected to focus on the continuing militant activity on both sides of the border, with Taliban forces allegedly infiltrating into Afghanistan from across the border in Pakistan.

Economic cooperation and reconstruction in Afghanistan are also on the agenda. President Musharraf is scheduled to meet cabinet ministers and address parliamentarians tomorrow. His delegation includes ministers for foreign and religious affairs and the petroleum sector, and the head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

“Frank discussions on the war on terror and expanding bilateral cooperation on regional issues,” read a statement by President Karzai’s office.

Pakistan foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told AFP news agency that the Presidents “will exchange views on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, reconstruction activities in Afghanistan and cooperation in the fight against terrorism,”

“Afghanistan is expecting the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to take effective action against terrorism,” Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Sultan Ahmad Baheen said.

Pakistan signed a peace agreement with pro-Taliban militants in the North Waziristan region on the eve of the visit. The deal aims to end years of unrest in the border province. Under its terms the Pakistan military forces and militants will stop attacks on each other and the militants have agreed to disarm or expel foreign Al-Qaeda-linked fighters in the area. Pakistan has rejected criticism that the deal will allow pro-Taliban forces to operate freely in the area.

“Pakistan is committed to its policy on war on terror, and Osama caught anywhere in Pakistan would be brought to justice,” army spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan told the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, President Karzai met the NATO General Secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in Kabul and signed an accord aimed at boosting security and development in the country. The NATO chief warned that “some of the terrorists, the spoilers, think they can win in the south,”, adding “They are wrong. Because they cannot win, they will not win, […] That is why we are engaged in combat as well at this very moment.”

The visit comes amidst an upsurge in violence in Afghanistan, with US forces saying that 60 militants were killed by artillery and air-strikes on Tuesday. Some 700 more are believed to be surrounded by soldiers in an operation in Khandahar province.

NATO and Afghan forces launched an operation in Khandahar’s Panjwayi district last weekend, and NATO reports 250 militants as killed in the operations, though a Taliban commander has disputed the figure and there is no independent confirmation of the toll. Hundreds have been killed in continuing fighting between government and international security forces and insurgents in the last four months.

An estimated 1500 families have been displaced by the fighting in Khandahar.

Suspected Taliban militants shot dead two muslim clerics in Lashkar Gah, capital of the Helmand province in the last two days and raided a district headquarters in the town of Arghandad in Zabul province.

Musharraf last visited Afghanistan in 2002. Afghanistan has previously complained that Pakistan is not doing enough to combat Taliban insurgency in its side of the 2,250km (1,400-mile) mountainous border between the two countries. Earlier in the year, allegations by Afghanistan that Taliban and Al-Qaeda leaders were living in Pakistan were dismissed by Musharraf as “nonsense”. In February, Afghanistan issued a list of 150 Taliban suspects it said were living in Pakistan. President Musharraf dismissed the information as “old and outdated”, but President Karzai reiterated that the list was up-to-date.

Some Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders have been arrested in Pakistan, which has also stationed close to 80,000 troops along the Afghan borders. There is international pressure on Musharraf to deal with Islamist groups in Pakistan who are believed to assist Taliban forces.

“Pakistan has the potential to be the solution to the problems of Afghanistan,” Afghan foreign ministry advisor Ali Muradian said.”We hope that President Musharraf will open a new chapter in relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

Pakistan was closely associated with the Taliban’s rise to power in the 90s one of only three nations that recognised the then Taliban government.

While state run dailies Kabul Times and Hewad expressed hope that two leaders will work together to improve security, The daily Cheragh said that while statements about restoring security can be expected from the meeting, “as experience has shown”, previous pledges by Pakistan “have not been fulfilled”.

Kabul Times also said Afghanistan was grateful for Pakistan’s help to thousands of Afghan refugees.

“The key concern is whether the agreement is going to lead to more insurgents going to and fro across the border or less,” A diplomat told AFP, while another questioned Pakistan’s peace deal with the militants.

Meeting The Standards Of Closing Property Sales

By Jon Caldwell

Financing details have to be included in your offer so that the seller can evaluate them. The size of your down payment is part of the financing details that you need to provide; the larger the size of your down payment, the more likely the lender will approve your mortgage. Your offer should also state what kind of mortgage you’ll be getting (fixed rate or adjustable rate). Protecting yourself is another reason why you should include your financing information in your offer. Should the interest rate suddenly rise quickly, you might be paying a higher mortgage than you expected. Placing a maximum acceptable interest rate in your offer protects yourself from that instance.

It is easy to imagine the home of your dream but finding one is a different topic. Being meticulous could help in the process of locating your dream home if you’re really determined in living in a haven. In choosing a house, you have to be particular also of the benefits the place can give you. It would also be much better and enjoyable if you happen to share the dream home of your partner. In this way finding the right home would be in harmony thus making it easier. It would also be beneficial if you widen your search. You can ask around all you want. Be specific with details, it could be your permanent place so you might as well be thorough about it. It could not be an easy task but remember, it would be all worth it in the end.

Regardless of where you’re located in the US – even if it’s in a desert, by a river, or in the Midwestern plains – your home is at risk for flooding. Floods can happen to anybody at any place because of rising river water, flash floods, or rapid snow melt. Even if you think that a flood in your area is highly unlikely, you should consider getting a flood insurance policy. It’s fairly inexpensive, particularly in high-risk flood areas since the policy will be backed up by a federally insured mortgage. If your community is a participant, you can get flood insurance from an agent via the National Flood Insurance Program. Remember that flood insurance is easily transferable; you can assign your existing flood insurance policy to a buyer.

Taxes eat up a considerable amount of your income, but did you know that real estate gives you excellent tax breaks? Investing in real estate has many tax advantages over receiving a monthly wage. On Capital Gains Rates you already save a lot; on capital gains you only get taxed 15%, as opposed to the 35% for wage income. If you sell your residence, you also get an exemption if you’ve been living there for the last five years. You also get to deduct the interest you need to pay on debts you got from acquiring your real estate properties. You even get tax deductions for the wear and tear of your rental properties, even if the property’s value appreciates! There are so many tax advantages to investing in real estate. As long as you plan your income wisely, you’ll be able to save a lot.

Most real estate listings are informative but boring, and it’s the boring factor that keeps the house from selling. This happens because most people let their real estate broker do the listing, which only communicates with other brokers but not prospective buyers.

Take charge of your listing instead so it can grab attention. You can do this by making sure you have great pictures – and even if you don’t have great pictures to begin with, you can always use Photoshop to bring out the property’s excellent features. If your lawn is dead, use the paintbrush to color it green. If it’s a cloudy day, wait for blue skies before photographing your house. When a buyer scans the listing with the agent, you only have two seconds to grab his or her attention. Making a lasting impression is a must if you want to invite a viewing.

DaBaby Levitating remix losing US radio audiences after the rapper’s comments on HIV/AIDS

Thursday, August 5, 2021

Rapper Dababy (cropped).jpg

Following remarks by the rapper DaBaby regarding HIV/AIDS at a Miami, Florida festival, his remix of Dua Lipa’s song Levitating has lost a significant amount of radio audience in the United States of America. Yesterday, Billboard reported that, out of all the radio plays for Levitating, DaBaby’s remix now only makes up 49.5% of the radio plays for the song, a 20.7% decrease from last week.

At a performance at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami, DaBaby told an audience, “If you didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cell phone light in the air”, and went on to say, “Fellas, if you ain’t suck a nigga dick in the parking lot, put your cell phone lights in the air.” Lipa responded on her Instagram story by writing that she was “surprised and horrified” by DaBaby’s words, adding that “we need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV/AIDS”.

Audacy, which is the second-largest radio group in the USA, told Billboard that they had removed the remix of Levitating from their stations “in light of DaBaby’s homophobic statements”. Jeremy Rice, who is the programming and branding director of Long Island-based WBLI in New York, has said that his station shifted to the version of Levitating that solely features Lipa, saying that WBLI management “just think it’s the right thing to do” given what he called DaBaby’s “plain wrong and hurtful” comments.

Fellow rapper T.I. defended DaBaby, arguing that “If you have a Lil Nas X video, and him living his truth, you gone damn sure have people like DaBaby who are going to speak they truth.” Lil Nas X is a gay rapper, who released the music video for his single Industry Baby on July 23, which “depicted him and a crowd of male dancers seemingly performing nude”, with their genitals blurred, according to Snopes.

Although DaBaby initially stood by his comments, on August 2 he apologised “to the LGBTQ+ community” for what he called “my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS”. While saying that he appreciated “the many people who came to me with kindness, who reached out to me privately to offer wisdom, education and resources”, the rapper also wrote that “social media moves so fast that people want to demolish you before you even have the opportunity to grow, educate and learn from your mistakes”.

Translation Jobs: How A Translator Works

Submitted by: Maric Vobler

When the offer made by the translator meets the work provider s needs and specifications, both can reach agreement on the nature and terms and conditions of the service to be provided. The transaction stems from the conjunction of a request for translation (made by the work provider via a call for tenders or other channels) and an offer of services by a translator, including a time schedule and an estimate. A compromise usually has to be reached between the translator s conditions of sale and his client s conditions of purchase.

Once agreement has been reached, some sort of contract is drawn up and signed. This generally includes a confidentiality agreement. The work provider sends the translator the material to be translated (which can be a text, a video for subtitling, a DVD for dubbing, documents, the contents of a Web site, code, messages, tapes, or any other kind of source material), together with a translation kit that includes anything that the translator might need.

Unless the material is certified 100% reliable, any source document, whether it be text, code, digital recordings or any other type of material, needs first of all to be checked.

In some cases, a number of specific and sometimes complex operations (such as extracting code, disassembling a software application, reconstructing all the on-line help material, keying in data, scanning a document, transferring videos, writing down the script, installing a file in a computer-assisted translation system, etc.) have to be carried out before the translation can start.

In the case of large-scale projects involving many different operators, a project manager will establish a work plan defining who does what and when, for when, and using what resources.

The process can be analysed in more detail as follows:

– the translator takes delivery of the material to be translated (any kind of material), checks it and makes it fit and ready for translation;

– the translator analyses the material to be translated;

– the translator looks for and processes any information required to help her/him get a full understanding of the material and clear up any ambiguous points (this may entail searching for the relevant documentation, studying the technical process or the product involved, being trained in how to use the product or materials involved, etc.);

– the translator assembles all the raw materials required to carry out the job (i.e. relevant terminology, phraseology, sentence structures or phrase templates, as well as previously translated material, etc.). In many cases, the raw materials come as one or more translation memories and dictionaries that may have to be upgraded prior to reuse;

– the translator sets up the version for translation/retranslation in the appropriate environment, complete with available resources;

– the translator translates the material – which, in some cases, may mean quite a lot of adapting, reorganising, and restructuring;

– the translator (or reviser) checks and revises the draft translation;

– corrections or amendments are made;

– the final version is validated;

– the translated material is formatted according to specifications, integrated or embedded into whatever product or medium is applicable (video, sound track, printed page, etc.) before being transferred to the relevant medium (disk, CD, DVD, Web site, etc.) This maybe part of the translator s job though it is usually taken care of by specialist operators;

– the final version is delivered to the translator s client.
